I am starting a planted tank. The tank measures 48Lx24Wx30T. I have a 250 watt metal halide fixture with 6700k bulb. I will be setting up a co2 system also. How many hours a day should I run the light? Should I consider other lighting options or will this work? Substrate is flourite mixed with filter sand.

Since you have the MH already you can use them. Lots of people use MH on planted tanks. If its just one bulb I don't think it will give enough light spread across 48". I like T5HO myself but halids will work since you have them. How long should you have them on. How long are daylight hours, 8-10hr. Seachems Flourite is good you can mixed it or use straight.

So If decide to switch to t5 how many bulbs would I need to have?

^ imo, you would likely need 3-4 T5HO bulbs to make sure you get a nice spread over the whole tank

That's sounds good. Up until now I have only had reef tanks. They required tons of light.
