I assume by "regular aquarium lights" you are referring to your typical flourecent hood lightings? If so, it depends on the output of lights you are trying to interchange, and also, the prongs on the lights - obviously, whether they are compatible. I have done that several times, adding actinics, and T-5's but it depends on the brand, and the watts. You don't need to go blowin **** up just to save a few bucks, LOL.
If your fluorescent lamp will fit in the fixture it will light. But the ballast will not push all of the light spectrum out of the lamp thus it will be useless to coral.
yeah as said, it'll light but it won't be intense enough to suit the different kinds of coral that you'd probably want, maybe just some shrooms and other low light coral
