I want to get some new lights for my 300g 8ft tank. All ill have in the tank are fish probably an umbee pair. I was looking into the marineland double bright 48" fixtures and just buying two of those. Kinda pricey lighting for just fish and no coral or plants. Anyone recommend a cheaper light that will look nice on my tank?

I don't know about the bulbs you are looking for could pickup one or two decent 48" shop lights from Home Depot for like $20-30 each. I think mine was like $25 and it holds two 48" T12 bulbs.

The marinelands werent bright enough on my 240 so im sure it would look worse on the taller 300. I just use triple tube T8 fixtures now with 1 6500k and 1 acitinic. I dont use all 3 bulbs it can hold because it was too bright

Check out beamswork, its just lije marineland leds but cheaper. If no plants u could get away with single brights, just not sure how deep they can penetrate your water.

If your handy, you can DIY for cheap like I did on my 8 foot 300.

I paid $75 for a Phillips Advance 4x54w T5 ballast, $25 on 8 waterproof end caps, $10 on stand offs, $5 on bulb clips, $60 on 4 bulbs (2x10k+2xActinc) + $10 on extra wire to extend leads.

You just have to wire it yourself, but they usually have a diagram right on the ballast, so it's easy. For a total of $185 for 216 watts of bright T5 light. I have 2 bulbs over each 4 foot section of the 8 foot tank.

A hell of alot cheaper than the $300 plus they ask for in stores! Good luck!
