Canada eh?
Hey all, I have never had fish befor so im new:nilly: and i have a few questions:

Do fish need light at night? my room is pitch black at night and i keep the lights off at night. Will the fish be ok or should i invest in a dim light or somthing. (theres always light during the day)

Also my understanding is that fish's size gets stuned by smaller tanks. I am having trubble understanding why this actually happens is it the large amounts of amonnia that stunts the growth? or simply the lack of space to move? lol i know if u stuck me in a box as a baby i wouldnt stop growin till it exploded.. haha so why the fish?

Ps: not that im not going to be provinding the nessesary space, just for my general knowledge ;)

a fishes growth gets stunted due to the build up of hormones in the water. these hormones slow down a fishes growth significantly. this build up happens quicker in smaller tanks so in a way yes tank size is a contributing factor but its mainly due to lack of maintenance that a fish gets stunted. this is what i have read here and elsewhere and also picked up during the years.
less maintenance = more hormones = stunted fish.
the old myth "a fish only grows to the tank" is exactly that, a myth.

i turn my lights out at night too. my sitting room is pitch black at night and my fish are ok.

u dont knw that,in china here they put water melons in squared boxes when they are small....the grow big but as they grow they keep increasing the size of the box but kept it square...in the end the melons were square shaped...
and in japan the smaller the feet the girl has the prettier she is assumed...so girl's feet would be cast in metal shoes to keep them as small as they can frm growing...they did used to grow but way below normal size :naughty:

anyways...to the relevent topic...
it does not matter if the light is open or closed at nite....but i prefer to give my fishes a few hours of darkness..

Fish are not fruit.

but back on topic, i turn my lights off at night aswell. Sometimes i dont' have a chance to turn my lights on. Nothing changes other than guppy fry missing ime heh

i think its different for stunting growth as mammals are warm blooded and fish are cold blooded.Cold blooded animals tend to adapt better to their surroundings more than warm blooded animals. i have a friend who works in the zoo and he tells me there was one time they confiscated an alligator from a man's apartment.the strange thing was,the alligator was already 2 years old,and it was only 25 inches. It was because the man kept the alligator in a small area to grow, therefore stunting its growth. So naturally if eg. u put an arowana which can grow to ard 2ft in length in a 2ftx1ftx1ft aquarium,it wont outgrow the aquarium.its growth will only be stunted.and it will have naturally lesser appetite than an arowana that is in a 6ftx2.5ftx2.5ft tank. A very easy way to spot stunted fish are its eyes,if you see its eyes is not proportionate to its body, being that the eyes look bigger, that means the fish is stunted.this will not apply for those oddballs like comet goldfishes etc.

then quit relating the two, I believe if you do a search it's been proven fish will grow to a relative size no matter the size of environment, even if it's detrimental to health.

u knw...i can have a argument here by saying "they have their theories and the something new comes in and the old theory looks ridiculus"...but anyways chill...

I believe if u do a research in this thread's first post, his post was the one relating him to a fish.
