ok so I have another thread oopen because I wasnt happy with the out put of my lights, I wanted brighter so I was asking what I should get. Well now that I have people asking about my lights I think I have relized that Im just a dummy and sont know what Im doing when It comes to lights,

So let me start and tell you what I know and hopefully yall can Help. I bought these lights used from a local fish store in Houston. The guy told me they were two 4 foot VHO T-12s with ballasts and they didnt come with any bulbs. So I bought them for 30 bucks a piece. I thought I got ripped off at the time cause they looked like crap but I needed somethiing cheap and quick to get my 240 up and running. SO any way I went to home depot and bought 4 4 foot t-12 lights that are 40 watts a piece. and then I went home and built a box to put them in to make them look better.

So now I am finding out that the lights are made by the Hamilton Technology Corporation and the specialize in reef lighting. I realize now that there is a difference between t-12 VHO and normal VHO. I looked up the site that my lights came from and I cant find anything that looked exactly like them but close. Mine look older than the ones they have on there site. But the ballasts that they resemble the closest say they are rated for 2 110 watts bulbs. So how do I have 40 watt bulbs in mine, wouldn't the ballasts pop them? I just need some help confirming what I have and If i can go brighter. and where to get the bulbs locally for a decent price. If what Im finding out is true that means with 110 watt bubs I will be able to go from 160 watts for the whole tank to 440 watts!!!!!!!!! SO Im excited and hoping it will make a big difference.

Last questions I have is have anybody heard of this company and are they good? Also from what I can see they are expensive so did I get a good deal on the lights? and If i did decide to sell them how much should i ask.

I have attached pics of the tank and lights please tell me what you think. And Yest I did put aluminum foil on the back of the lights as a ghetto reflector.

If you get the correct 110W VHO bulbs your tank will be a lot brighter.

You should make sure you have clearance between your tank and the light fixture - you could build up a lot of heat with 440W of lighting in that small of an enclosed space.

would adding fans fix the problem?

I have a Hamilton Technology 5' fixture on my 100. I got it for $20 not working.
After disassembly I found the only thing of value was the housing and lens. The ballasts were poorly installed and fried for lack of cooling. I added fans at both ends. After replacing the ballasts, bulbs, fans and related hardware I have a decent piece at half the price of new.
You get what you paid for.
