So my tank is having some issues, it only has three tinfoil barbs, two comets, and to pictus catfish. oh yeah and a betta. every early afternoon i turn the light on and they all freak out and start trying to hide and do it for several hours. Its got one florescent light the runs the length of it and its pretty old from what i remember. could this be an issue or are my fish just vampires or something.
Your thoughts would be great
Thanks

have they not been exposed to the light that much before?

My fish used to do that when i turned my lights on, but then i started having the lights on more frequently and they stopped freaking out.

Put the light on a timer.. easier on your fish.. they will learn to anticipate lights on and off and won't be so skittish.. and you'll never have to worry about accidentally leaving it on or off ever again! lol... seriously though after I put my knife on a timer he adapted very fast to the light cycle. and now swims around in full light.

Not sure really why this happens, but if you look anything like your avatar, it might have something to do with it!

Well here's my guess.

You have three tinfoil barbs and 2 pictus cats.

#1 Tinfoils tend to freak out at the best of times, especially if not kept in large schools in a large tank, with planted sides.

Pictus cats roam constantly and are known to bursts of sudden speed.

Your comets are totally freaked out by the other fish.

Combine that with the light, and voila.

My suggestions?

Add at least another 4 tinfoil barbs and make sure you have a giant tank. Add a few more pictus cats and make sure you have a giant tank. Add decorations on the sides of said giant tank. Remove the comets, they shouldn't be in there anyway.

Hope this helps.

You could put tinted plastic (like the car window tint) between the light and top of your tank.
Or maybe try wrapping some electrical tape around the bulb to lower the amount of light going into the tank?
Just some ideas I've used.
