can i use a regular shop light and hang it over the fish tank and have it good enough for the coral? or do i need special light bulbs? really want to start a saltwater tank

wrong color temp, need new bulb and i wouldn't put a shop light over it.
Wrong reflectors and prolly a noisy hot ballast.
The most expensive part of a good MH system is the reflectors.

wrong spectrum unless you put extra money for correct bulbs which may not work properly and may mess the whole fixture up. better off buying a nice light and saving yourself the aggravation.
