A. Can stress out your bichirs if left for way to long. They will develop skittishness. May not also eat.

A. My bichirs gets pale when the lights are off but that doesn't mean they are stress. They are just blending in. They later goes back to normal in the morning to match the shades and brightness of the day.
It's the environment plays an important part in bichirs colors and patterns, not how you put the lights.

thanks king, hope not to many question being asked,
cheers

I turn the lights on every other day for the plants, but I there has been times where I don't turn them on for a couple of weeks (out of laziness mostly). I do notice that they get used to the lights and if left without lights for awhile, when you turn them on, they will freak.

if you want lighter bichirs use white substrate

I have my lights on for 6-7 hours a day as its quite heavily planted , however theres lots of places for them to hide within the plants and in caves. I also put floating plants in on one side of the tank that stops/reduces the lights dramatically on one side of the tank.
