i need to buy 3 hoods and lights for my 70 gallon. incandescent are cheaper, but flourescent are there as well. need some suggestions on which to buy and why.

Use your main a flourescent's and if you want a little extra light with the electric bill use incandesents. This is a whole different story for a planted tank, don't use incandesents.

IMO- its not even a question - flourescent bulbs run cooler, use less power, are brighter and bring out the colors in the aquarium WAY better than incandescent..

incandescents in my hood caused my 10gals temp to go from 80 to 88 in a few hours.... using kit provided bulbs.

nothing but flourescents for me from now on if they will be close to teh water

Nothing is prettier than having a 50 watt halogen spot bulb hanging from the celing about 18 inches above a tank. This produces a wonderful "sun like" ripple effect in the water.
My next choice would be compact fluorescent bulbs.
