Hello, i dont have a timer for my lights and i turn them on at 6am and off at 6pm, the tank doesnt get much natural light. After 6pm the lights are off for the night cause i read that it is bad for the fish to get too much light. I want to be able to see the fish at night, or from like 6-10, can i turn the light back on, turn it off during the day?? Any recomendations?

The lights are for our benefit only. Turn them on when YOU want. Mine get turned on at night or when I want to see them. Half the time it gets turned on for maybe 12 hours a week.

but don't the fish need to sleep? and what if i want to get some plants?

The fish don't actually "sleep" as we do. They will slow down and usually sit at the bottom of the tank motionless besides some fin movements. Unless your banging on their tank 24/7 or lights on for weeks on end it will be fine. Plus the more light the greater chance of having algae. I like algae, but too much it can make your tank from looking natural to not well kept in other people eyes.

With plants of course you will need a certain amount of lights on/off. The fish will "sleep" (slow down) regardless and adapt to your schedule.

No worries.

Leave your lights off during the day, if you get plants leave the lights on all day or buy a timer. I have plants and leave the lights on from 5:30 to 9:30, the fish don't mind.

i went from 8 hours during the day to 8 hours in the afternoon and evening on one of my tanks. most of the fish adpated quick
