Hey all, I have an issue. We all know the benefits of growing live plants in the tanks with our fish, and we all know what big cichlids do to live plants. My question is has anyone tried Lilly pads in their tanks? I understand you would have to keep them thinned out to let light into the tank, but if the fish don't/can't destroy them, is there anything wrong with letting Lillie's thrive in the tank?

I think if you stayed with the smaller species it would work ok. Back when I had a planted tank it had a tiger lotus in it that did well.

This may or may not help you but I have had 2 different large male Midas in with this plant my wife got it for me about 2 years ago in bulb form... I believe it is a type of red lily.... . It grows long stemmed leaves... Which I pinch off or they die off.but also would like to see if they can grow to the top of the tank..

I use tiger lotus in a tank with Acarichthys, Guianacara, Stomatepia, and Konia, without any problems.

I have tried them without success with larger central American cichlids, because the cichlids either chew on the stems, or dig them out.
Any of the large lilies need plenty of soil substrate and are heavy feeders.
I also use hardy lilies in my outdoor, summer, cichlid ponds without a problem. Cichlids are Australoheros, and Gymnogeophgus.

Alright I guess I'll try it. My jags are still small so hopefully the Lillie's hit the surface before they drag em around. I have almost 3" of live plant substrate in that corner of the tank. I also tried to protect the bulb by tucking it behind my heater and airline.
