I was just wondering if its possible to put any surface pond plants like a cool lilly pad into a tank and have it float on top? i don't see why its not possible I've just never it done before and don't know if theres any downsides. thanks
I don't see why it wouldn't be possible as long as the plant's requirements are met.I can see a nice sized pot housing a lily with its stems extending to the surface.
Your tanks basically a mini river. Creativity/originality is why I love this hobby!

The dwarf tiger lotus do well, you must have the proper amount of light though, and they seem to be very tasty to some fish. My cichlids decimated mine.
If pruned the leaves will stay submerged, but if one leaf hits the surface, all will quickly follow, and from the side, is not as appealing.
I found some sunlight seems to really help keep them healthy.
I also overwinter the normal pond type lilies in the basement during the winter in a kiddy pool, but as stated above, they get very large root tubers and systems, and need pots to match. My pots are at least a ft in diameter, and over a ft deep. Even in these pots, the roots creep out holes another ft.
