Hey everyone,

I just set up a new tank and was curious on how fast lima shovelnoses grow. I have never kept ond before and worried he might grow fast and eat some of my other fish in the tank.

The lima is 5 inches and his tankmates are...

1 tiger oscar- 2 inches
1 jack dempsey- 2 inches
1 choclate cichlid- 4 inches
1 gold severum

Well. I took home the tiniest Lima I have ever seen....like 3 inches. It was eating brine and blood worms. Six months later she was eating my congo tetras (adults and subs) Worse was she ate my transparent knife. I truly thought it was too big but she folded it up. Now she is about a year and a bit over a foot long, able to eat many things.

I would say you have some time (several months) but it will depend on how well your's is fed as to just how fast she may outgrow your other fish. Nice thing is that the shovelnose don't eat stuff that doesn't fit.....but it is remarkable what fits.

you can literally watch it grow thats how fast they grow!

Well not really but i swear that after a week u can see a difference... i could with my tiger shovelnose, not the lima, but close,..

Like all shovels, Limas grow fast and big !! You may need to move your 2 inchers outta there and fast. Shovelnose catfish can swallow relatively bigger prey. You'll notice that they first measure up their potential prey using 2 front barbels before pouncing.
