I'm going to try to set up a new terrarium for my giant day gecko this summer, which could possibly leave me with an available 55 gallon tank. I've taken a recent liking to shovelnose catfish and I want to know if I can keep a Lima in a 55. If so, what are good tankmates?

55 is too small. not only can lima's get to 18", they are also pretty skittish and need some room to freak out without causing damage to themselves.

^agreed.. You can keep one in there for a little but not for life..

Gotcha! Any other shovelnose catfish that stay on the smaller size (I highly doubt it)?

Duopalatinus peruanus, stays very small. Pimelodus ornatus gets to about a foot. Just some thoughts.

A gulper would be good if you will fork up the cash

Agreed with the gulper rec. Also, how about jaguar catfish? Neither are shovelnoses, but it might be extremely difficult to locate the ones that don't get so big.

If I can find a gulper, I'd get in, no questions asked!!! I like jaguars a lot too, one of the prettiest catfish I've ever seen. Most likely, I'll get the jaguar. I'd love to turn the old vivarium into a discus and/or dwarf cichlid tank. I've heard that jags are pretty peaceful, but it is a catfish.....

Ive heard that jags are really exspensive and then you dont see them..ATALL!
