could it be done with no tank mates i really want one or do i have to wait to get a bigger tank

i say do it

should be fine for life, but that would be minimum.
But minimum tank=maximum care.

yah it would get the best im assuming that it would be the only fish i could have in the tank or could i have something else

my limas are less than a year and are in a 75 gal. The biggest is around 13 inches. I am already thinking of upgrading them. Unless their growth slows they will need a larger tank soon. Everyone lists the max sizes at 14-18 inches, but I have personally seen one that is 21" and have seen pics of ones over 2'. They should be ok in a 75 for a few years, but I wouldn't try to keep one in there for life.

another note these are fast skittish catfish, and the bigger the tank the better. If they don't have enough room when they dart around they could break their snouts on the glass and go into septic shock from infection. One of mine has already broken it's snout twice.

ok i was planning to upgrade soon to like a 180gallon cichlid tank will thay be ok with be cichlids as long as thare not to aggresive and should i get more than one

It would be best to get him in at least a 180 as soon as you would be able to. I recently picked one up and he is in with my CA/SA cichlid 180 gallon tank and seems to be doing fine. He is growing about 1 to 1-1/2 a month and I do keep him in with some pretty aggressive fish.
