Just wondering the growth rate of the lima shovelnose. I have just bought one that is about 3-4 inches long. I current have it in a 10 gallon tank that I use to keep ghost shrimp and feeders in. I need to keep it in the tank until it is about 6 inches because the tank I'm going to put it in has flowerhorns in it , so it needs to be able to defend itself. So how long on average will it take for it to reach 6-7 inches. It has plenty of feeder guppies, ghost shrimp, convict fry, and a few Flowerhorn fry to eat in the tank.

It should take maybe 4-5 months to double its size and add girth.

IME, limas are too pussy to defend themselves, hopefully yours will be able to. When startled they will swim into the glass and the result will be a bent snout, especially if the tank is too small.

At that size try to get it on prepared food. My old lima was weaned off live feeders as soon as i got it, it didn't reject any prepared food ever, its much easier, cheaper and healthier that way

my 12" lima refuses to eat prep/frozen food . I have tryed starving it for 2 weeks..

I dont mind giving him feeders or small cichlids. I never had any prob with him being a wussy

Bump for any updated experiences, I found one at my lfs that was there for a year, hidden every time I went there. Finally saw it today, as soon as I have a cycled tank Im grabbing him.
