Got a question for all you sumpers out there. I'm finalizing the design plans for my new tank and I ran across a cool overflow calculator at reef central

http://www.reefcentral.com/index.php/drainoverflow-size-calc

Gph is going to be around 3000 gph in a 300 gallon tank. When I input that figure I get a linear overflow size of 45 inches ( I'll probably run 2" drains to be sure, Herbie style). How much influence does the overflow teeth and depth of them have on this number and is this something only applicable for reefers since surface skimming is extremely important? 12x6x6 overflows will give me 48 but I really want teeth on them. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Nevermind. Dug around their site and found the answer from Beananimal himself. Teeth evidently cut the number in half and it mostly has to do with the amount of surface skimming they recommend for saltwater systems. I guess it's something to consider if I were to ever change to salt in the future.

And on a side note, toothless is the preferred method for reefers. Maximizes skimming ability
