How many of you MFKers use Linux on their computers?

Which distro do you use?

ubuntu for a while, i reinstall it for school in a couple months.

Nice. Ubuntu is pretty sweet.

I just put gOS on my computer today. I really like it. I've used at least 2 dozen distros in the past. and this one is among my favorites so far. I could watch videos and listen to music right away -- which is NICE. It's pretty clean too. And speedy.

You have to love multiple desktops too. ;)

I just picked up a Notebook with Linux installed :( I HATE IT!! Fadora is the one that is on it...

I Haven;t had time to get into tryin to like it.. Mainly as The Dang lady that traded it to me did not gimme the Root password.. SO i cannot get passed the desktop... I cannot get on the internet.... I cannot get the DVD drive to even read discs of any type...

Kinda frustrating!!

I would love to get into The Mac world.. And Linux.. BUT>.. I am kinda hung up.

Did she set the password for root to default (root)? I know, kind of an obvious question...

You could also try using 'sudo' instead of becoming root.

I used to use Linux - had Ubuntu set up.

It was alright, it was fun to try but I found it very complicated!

To put it simply "sudo" is kind of like a pseudo-root... It allows you to take actions only a root user can do, while still remaining a general user.

I'm not too sure if Fedora allows sudo users root priveleges...

For instance, in a terminal, if I wanted to install 'firefox' I would type the code (for fedora only):

sudo yum install firefox

It would then ask for a password (which you would give the password you log in with), and as long as your username is on the sudoers list, it will allow you to act as root while not actually being root.

Let me know if I lost you again. lol
