The wife really likes the lionfish, but I have my concerns about being "stung". How likely is it that I will get stung by one of these? I have a 180 gallon tank. I think these are beautiful fish, but I am really worried about being nailed during tank maintenance. Should I be concerned or just take the plunge?

it is djust like a bee sting, nothing will hapend if ur not alergic.
u dont get stung if u watch out i gues:p but ofc if u push ur hand down on it u get stung:D

I am not allergic to bees ect. The wife is very allergic. Of course she wanted the tanks, but I have to do all the maintenance so she will not be putting her hands in there. I generally were rubber kitchen gloves coated in neoprene when I put my hands in the with the "nasty" fish. Would the Lionfish fins be able to penetrate them?

A bee sting would not bother me in the least. I also heard if you do get nailed to put your hand in the hottest water you can stand and that kills the burning. True?

well of course with anything that can sting you should always be aware of where the lionfish is when cleaning or in the tank. If its on the right of the tank clean the left and use a net to come behind it slowly not touching it to get it to swim to the other side so you can clean the right. It is painful to get stung by them there is nothing to do but go to hospital where they run extremely hot water on it just below boiling since it will stop the proteins in the poison. I have been stung 15 times and it is not the worst sting but you won't feel good for a day or 2 depending on its size and your reaction. But you can avoid this by just being aware of them and giving them there space.

I got stung once by a lionfish. It felt like I hit the end of my finger with a hammer.

I got stung by the last one I owned about 10 years ago. It was no bee sting!!; but he was large (around 10"). They are great fish, but you should ALWAYS wear gloves when putting your hands in the tank.

i'd rather be stung by a lionfish than a foxface anyday...

if you're not allergic it's no big deal
either ridiculously hot water or vinegar should work well incase you do get hit
shouldn't get past the gloves

I got stung by a motoro stingray one time and i must tell u i was a little concerned but i recovered, so a lionfish stinging shouldnt be too bad just dont do nothing to provoke the fish but sometimes the fish are too fast

and i never knew that a foxface stings

I've always been curious myself. Lionfish are definitely my favorite saltwater fish. I would probably start off with one of these guys if I ever get a saltwater tank started.

When they sting...is there pressure that is needed to puncture you or is it like a Jellyfish where all they need to do is brush up against you?
