Is there a black species of Lionfish? I mean BLACK even in a brightly colored tank. The reason I ask is I saw one in a local Petco and my first thought was melanism. I know squat about salt so I thought I'd throw it out there. If it is melanistic its a freakin steal. They had it marked at 29.99 iirc.

I've seen volitans that were very very dark, if not true black then damn close, with the white banding they definitely look very black, and they're gorgeous when they're happy.

30 bucks? not bad i diddnt know petco had those type of fish. maybe its just the ones ive been to
Yeah this Petco has a really nice display. The FW selection is crap but they have some nice SW stuff.
Just thought I'd throw this out to see if it was worthwhile. Like I said I dont know much about SW, Ive seen a few diff types of lions but never a black one like this.

could be a black voltian lion... or a genetically modified lion :)

I researched them pretty well, and I haven't any cases of that type of fish. It could have been selective breeding, gentic fluke, ect. But it seems unlikely PetCo would have anything like that. But I'm no expert. :)

I have been to several petcos in my area. only one of them actually really carries SW fish. That one has all your basics, lion fish, snowflake, ocellaris, etc
