Did anyone see the CBS news testerday towards the end on the program? They had a story on the over population of lion fish along the east coast. They had some great video footage but it made me mad that people are going out there and trying to kill as many as possible. They said a lion fish has no predators due to their poison in their quills.

I saw animal documentary on the topic. Lionfish are taking over.

Seen a few documentarys on this and discussed a few times with Bob Fenner...its a bad situation as they are correct when they say there are no natural predators for them.......YET......As with most aspects of life, it will evolve, and a natural predator will become apparent at some point...All this due too people dumping these species of fish with no care or thought for what they are doing or the knock on effect it causes....

Can this species survive if dumped lets say the atlantic ocean? I dont know why anyone would do such a thing. Awesome show fish in any predator marine tank. My 2 lion fish are like my oscars. They come to the top of the tank and wiat for me to drop krill in.

Volitan lions have been reported as seen in the Altantic since back in 1993'ish if memory serves me correct..

So they can survive the cooler waters of the atlantic. Wow. Any clue on how to sex these badboys?

Yes....that is what has made this a real issue, is that they can survive in that temperature water, rather than the species being killed off from the temp..

Regarding sexing a lionfish...near impossible as there is no visual physical difference between males and females.....the only real time you can see the sexual difference is at spawning where you will see the female release the eggs and the male release sperm...

The whole lion fish debate will rage on for years everyone in the scientific community has there own Theories of there arrival and so on but being a bio major I have several myself but quite frankly am sick of the issue.
