i was wondering what people have had success with while feeding a lionfish. in specific a volitan lion, very small about 3 in if that, i know they need essential nutrients that cant be found in feeder guppies/ tuffies but just wanted to get him the best possible, i heard crab meat and such was a good idea but id like to get a few opinions

Lionfish are carnivores, but like anything, they require a varied diet to maintain their health and vitality. You can start by feeding them live foods and wean them onto frozen foods later if you wish, but their diets should consist of shrimps, prawns, krill, plankton, silversides, smaller fish (or fish flesh)- ones which would be natural prey in the wild, not your typical nutritionally void feeders, and every now and then crustacean flesh.

thanks man i will be sure to fit him to the best diet possible! im still trying to get him to eat some frozen foods lol

yeah WB is spot on, but while he's small you might as well try some mysis if you got any lying around (for other fish?), also pretty much any chopped seafood (stay away from fatty fish like salmon and tuna)

the occasiona gut-loaded live item i think would be appreciated by you and your lion :D

You can feed your Volitan almost any fresh seafood. Obviously you have to remove hard shells, they cannot break shells like a Puffer. You must NEVER feed freshwater feeder fish to them. They will devolope Liver problems.

I have mine eating Hakari Massivore Delite Pellets, in addition to frozen shrimp and silversides. You can get most to eat non-living, frozen food, but this is the first one I have gotten to eat pellets. But they have to be moving! (just dropped in for example)

My lionfish started out eatting silverside and krill, but as he grew he helped himself to Damsels, and other fish. They love ghost shrimp. Do not feed them any type of feeder guppy or minnow. They tend to swallow the fish whole and the heads could get stuck in their throats. My guy ate a frozen mix I found at teh grocery store, called Seafood Medley. It is a mixture of Mussels, Squid, Octopus, and fake Crab meat. Aside from the fake meat he ate that. ***Make Sure You Read The Label*** Some of those Seafood Mixes from store are bleached instead of blanched. Try to find an organic fish store in your town. A little more pricey but well worth it.
