I am working on planning out my 110gal SW predator tank, but I'm wondering, how many Volitan Lionfish would I be able to comfortably keep in a 48"X18"X30" tank throughout their lives. I don't know anyone who's ever kept more than 1 in a tank, and I'm wondering if they are ok to keep in pairs or small groups.
My plan is to keep the rockwork somewhat limited to free up alot of swimming space. For stocking I was thinking maybe a pair of Volitan Lions, and an Eel of some sort, and a few other predatory marine fish like a Marine Betta, or some kinf of puffer. It's gonna be a long ways before I actually get it set up, but I figure if I know what I will stock it with beforehand, then I'll be able to modify the tank to suit those fishes needs.

you could probably get a pair in there with an eel. make sure you (never mind i'll pm it to ya).
keep the rock to one side for the eel
make sure you have good filtertanion and powerful skimming on a tank like that though.

I think two volitans that can reach 15" with fins expanded would be to much for 48x18 tank.

Yeah, that could be a tough one. I have one in a 125 and I think he's ready to be upgraded to a 180. I couldn't imagine having 2 in my 6' tank...nevermind a 4'.

Kitty, if you plan on upgrading, I could see you getting away with two little guys for a while. They do bulk up very quickly though. If you're not 100% set on a Volitan, you could get away with a couple of the smaller guys like Pterois antennata (8-9") or Pterois radiata (9-10") or even some of the dwarf species.

Check out this site...it has some good info on the different species of lionfish.

I was also maybe considering a bunch of Fuzzy Dwarf lions. They're cute and got alotta personality.

Yeah they do have a lot of personality.

Out of all of the dwarf lionfish, they are probably the best to keep. They are very hardy, can be weaned much easier than other lions, and they actually swim around :D .

You should be fine with a few in a your tank as long as you have a lot of rock work. They do show aggression to conspecifics when their territory is threatened, but they are not as bad as the Fu Man Chu lions.

dude you could get away with one, maybe two. screw peoples opinions try it yourself man. i had 5 percula clowns in a 7 gallon and that is supposedly too much i had it for 6 months before i broke it down. it all depends on the fish. we house 3 in a 90 at my work and theyre great. the only thing that i find a bit annoying is having to feed them live or with a baster, i say just get a bunch of dwarfs and some small scorpions maybe a small non aggressive trigger ( sargassum, niger, bluethroat crosshatch.) thats your best bet.

Peoples opinions are one thing . . . good animal husbandry is another. People who speak of "things working" in spans of months and not years typically are very shorted sited ,have very limited experience. . . . .and work at Petco.

5 baby percs (and by perculas I'm sure you meant Ocellaris) you can keep in a 7 gallon for 6 months . . .but not 16 years. . . or even 6 years for that matter.
Given time even a clutch of sibling babies will produce a mated pair that will kill the rest of them in a tank that size.

"having to feed them live or with a baster"
again with the very limited expericence. . . most lions train up to frozen quite easily. Takes a little work but I usually have them on frozen in less than two weeks and I don't know what the hell you would need a baster for feeding silversides or krill to a lion????

"a small non aggressive trigger"
again with the shorted sightedness. . . .
Prime example of this the referring to an Odonus Niger, Niger Trigger as a small non-agressive trigger. Yes a juvi is quite literally a SMALL NON-AGGRESSIVE trigger. . . an adult is not. They get huge (all be it somewhat slowly). And when they are big they are just as agressive as other trigs. This is a mistake people make a lot with Nigers. And it's not that they are particularly agressive among triggers. I will admit among triggers even a huge niger is pretty laid back compared to truly "AGGRESSIVE" trigs like clowns and undulateds but they are triggers none the less and you are faced with the inevitable roll of the dice to see if your big Niger decideds to start nipping at your lions which can and usually will spell disaster to both fish. That's the trouble I see over and over again in the trade with Niger's. People constantly house them with fish/inverts you wouldn't normal house with a trigger-trigger (like lions, butterflies, crustaceans etc. etc.). . .and then he gets big he figures out what those big beautiful orange teeth are for.

The lion + eel combo would be a much better choice in the long run regardless of tanksize.

And as afformentioned in others comments. . .there is always the option of
upgrading later. Using a 90 gallon as a grow out for a pair (or even trio ) of volitans would honestly take quite a bit of time (year or two) before it got to be difficult on you or your fish as long as you started with smaller specimens (stay away from very tiny specimens though, from my experience they aren't nearly as hardy) My 75 gallon is a good example. . .(see signature) . . .it works now because my specimens are small or small-ish lol. I don't plan on it working for years!I plan on getting nothing but bigger and bigger and more and more tanks. . partly. . because I'm a monstefishkeeper and that's what we do :screwy: .

If you really don't plan on getting a bigger tank (you should! just because :grinno:) then yes I'd agree with going with a FEW dwarves.

well said.

Ok, say I were to go with 1 Volitan(or other larger lionfish) and that Brazillian Dragon eel I've been eyeing at the store.....
How about some dither fish? something pretty, that won't get eaten, and that will do fine in a FO kind of setup? Large damsels? Smaller angels? wrasse? ideas would be apreciated.
