ok so here's the tank. i have a 110 gallon tank and plan to put two lionfish in it. currently i have about 70-80lbs of live rock and a sand substrate. in the corners i have 2 koralia 4's and the tanks been up with this in it about 6months now with only a few big hermits and a big maroon clown in it.

question i have is would it be better served to put a big canister filter (fluval fx5) on the tank or a protein skimmer (coralife 125) as the main source of filtration. im leaning towards the skimmer. gimme some advice

skimmer by far all the fluval would do is polish the water. the live rock and sand is your bio filtration.

that was my thinking and what i did with my first set-up so it's prly how i'm gonna go with this one too

I would say go with a skimmer, but if you can get a much better skimmer than the corallife for a few bucks more. If you are going with a hang on check out the octopus skimmers, and get the biggest one you can afford, don't go by the gallon rating. Lions produce a huge bioload and extra power on the skimmer will go a long way. I owned a coral life 220 which I ran in a sump and all it did was overflow and kick out micro bubbles, for a little extra cash my ASM G3 kicks the stuffing out of a coral life.
