i know that lip lockin is a sign of courtship for some fish...im not up to par on convicts or firemouths...but my FM and CON are locking lips i know my con is a female...no clue about the sex of the FM...but i see them lip lockin every now and then and my female has some realliy nice colors showin( well they are nicer then normal i noticed....) could this be a sign...do the two species lock up as the pair off...

There have been some firecons on this forum.

Lip locking is usually a sign of aggression towards New World cichlids. Sometimes it is incoporated with breeding but rare in most cichlids. More than likely your con female is trying to claim territory and is beating on your firemouth. Firemouths are not the most aggressive cichlid and are less aggressive then convicts. Firemouths seem to be aggressive but usually back down when threatened.

my jags used to jaw lock, it was definelty not courtship

actually...the more i have been watching them the female con is looking more nervous and backs out of the lil exit hole in the cave when the FM enters...ill try post a pic of the FM to see if its at an age to sex...i hope they breed i wouldnt mind firecons...

If used in courtship, most of the time its to check to see if the other is strong enough for a good genes. A female isn't going to want to breed with a male that she can kick its butt. So they check to see if he can hold his own.
