Hi all.

Couple months back I bought some Vita-Chem, multiple vitamins in liquid form for my freshwater tank. Supposedly it is "tissue soluble" and great for "fin regeneration and lateral line disease". I never hear anyone mention vitamin supplements on this forum and was just curious what the thinking was around this issue. As it is I just use this product from time to time (not as much as they recommend) and feed a good quality varied diet.

Thoughts?

Waste of money if you are feeding a quality pellet food. A great product to use as a presoak if one is primarily feeding frozen food.

Some people add it to there pellets for the added vitamins and swear by in improving color.

If you're already feeding a quality pellet, you're not gaining any vitamin content by using a product such as Boyd Vitachem, Selcon, etc. For the most part you're paying for water, and the container that it comes in. The overall vitamin & trace mineral profile is pretty weak next to what's found in any quality pellet food.

I am not disagreeing with you on that, the reason I am using it is because I have cichla that I refuse to feed live food and will only take cut up tilapia which does not have all the vitamins they need.
I will use it until they are pellet trained and then I will not need it.

I always Wondered about it. I mean if your using a quality pellet why would you wanna use it and i always wondered if there was a difference with this and a quality pellet???

Bingo. Ive used it with morays that would only eat frozen shrimp(presoaked with vitachem). Other than that I think it just compromises water quality faster. Largely unnecessary for species that will take pellets IMO

Do you think I should just dump it? My fish all eat pellets and anything else I drop in the tank for that matter. And I try to buy quality food too. I've been using the vita-chem maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks. My fish are in great shape but that could have many reasons including that I don't have aggression and do all the other regular tank and water maintenance too.

I thought maybe some of the folks with really monster fish might be using this stuff.

I've tried it myself before for brighter color and didn't notice a difference in the coloration of my fish after a couple months of using it. I'd say to finish off your bottle and save your money next time.
