Please help, I've got a sick Angel fish.

It is around a year old and 2 1/2 inches.

In the past it has always been a good feeder, inquisative and friendly towards the other fish; but now it is acting listless.

Below is a list of information, can you please suggest what the problem may be.

All comments are appreciated and I thankyou for your time.

Symptoms:

  • Listlessness
  • Hanging around the heater
  • Gasping mouth - But not at the surface
  • Eating ok - but not much
  • Hiding - behind plants
  • No other physical symptoms
Other Fish In Tank:

  • 4 Torpedo Barbs
  • 3 Gourami
  • 1 Rainbow Shark
  • 2 Rainbow Fish
  • 2 Alibo Cori
  • 1 Plec
  • 1 African Dwarf Frog
  • 1 Clam

  • All other fish are healthy
Environment:

  • 0 Ammonia
  • 0 Nitrite
  • Little Nitrate
  • PH Neutral

  • Half teaspoon of salt added on every other water change
  • Temperature: 75 degrees

  • 46 Gallon tank (UK)
  • 48 x 15 x 18 inches
  • Tank setup for 11 months
  • Been no sudden changes in environment
  • No algae

  • Artifical plants
  • Bogwood
  • Gravel

  • External filter

Base on the symptoms and information it seem to be afraid of something. Try staying for sometime in front of your aquarium specialy at night and observe. Dim the light! PM me on what ever you observed.

Well the angel is still behaving weird - unsociable, hiding, detached. He's been this way for about 2 weeks now.

I wonder if he's lonely?
Or cold?

Anyone any ideas?

Hi.. Hope your angel is better... I'm no expert but I've always kept my angels at higher temps around 80 or even higher.. also what are you measuring at 2 1/2 inches the body or the whole angel including fins.. That seems a bit small for a one year old angel if it includes the fins.. I think part of the problem might also be your unusual assortment of tankmates.. Have they all been together for a year or so??? As fish age they sometimes become more territorial and your gouramis or sharks or one of the others might be stressing the angel.. Just thoughts... I think you are just gonna really have to watch especially at night with maybe just a night light on or something... Don't know what else to tell you.. Good luck with the angel... Sue:D

You need to bring your temp way higher to about 80-83 and DONT add aquarium salt it is only meant for mollies and platies it's bad for your cories and angels. I would put him in a tank alone kind a like a quarantine tank so he doesn't pass on the illness. :)

The angel is 2.5 inches in body only - larger with fins added. I have never seen any fighting, the other fish just ignore him.

I thought about increasing the temperature but was worried the torpedo barbs would not do well at 80+

Also - the temp has been constant at 75 for the past year or so - it never bothered him before, only in the last 2 weeks that he's started acting funny. Strange.

thanks for the replies - any other opinions?

well, i would raise the temp to 80-84. instead of salt, i would use aquarium water conditioner, i use aquasafe. how big is the pleco? i had one that would always fight with my oscar. the shark might have a part in it too, they are territorial. he could just be unhappy about how much space he has to swim. he also could just be lonely, i have 4 angels and they dont separate from eachother for very long.

Yh i think that it is the shark being boistrous...temp shouldnt play a part in it, my angels are in the normal 27* temp....and are showing signs of breeding, if you can add another couple of angel a lil smaller than him say 2" and it might give him more confidence and less stress as there are more of them...

Well sad to say the angel is dead this morning.
I examined the body and there were no external injuries - bit of a mystery really.

I have never seen he shark bullying before, unless he does it during the night - but I doubt it as he usually goes to bed earlier than most of the other fish.

thanks for your help anyway x
