i was just feeding my quaker and when i opened the box where i keep his food/spare toys a bunch a moths flew out. are they harmful? how do i get rid of them? is the food still safe for my bird to eat?

the food is still safe, but you really should throw it away cuz you will NEVER get rid of them if you keep the food. the best thing to do is store the bird food in an airtight container such as tupperware or whatever is similar. weevils also frequent bird foods since they are mainly made from seeds and grains which are their natural food sources. storing in an airtight container will prevent these as well. you may want to check any other foods that are in the house. pastas, flour, grains, etc are all prone to these pests. the more thoroughly you empty out the pantry of infested food, the less chance you have of getting them again

Wow we had these. They were in the fish food, the dog food, the cat food, you name it. I first noticed them because our dog had dropped a cookie behind the sofa, and they were living in the cookie. We had to vacuum the area, under the sofa, buy an airtight cookie jar for the dog, etc. We started only keeping small amounts of fish food out in airtight containers, and freezing the rest. We also switched to foods for our cats (already used it for the dog) that had ziploc-type closures on them. I still see one every now and then. They are really a problem. I'd get rid of the food and start over, or you'll never get rid of them!

i almost forgot about this thread until i saw a moth today, thanks for the help, i will try and get some big airtight containers tomorrow
