gymnogeophagus Balzanii has what looks like 2 little hairs coming out of his ass. he eats just fine and is growing good but im wondering if this is some kind of parasite and wether i can use a treatment to get rid of it?

thanks in advance

It sure sounds like camelanus worms. Most people describe them as 'red stick looking things'. Never quite heard them described as "red hairs on cichlid's ass"
I'm sorry but I've never had them on my fish and don't know offhand how to treat them, I know they're a pain to get rid of and you've got to treat the whole tank. Look it up and you'll find how to treat it.

Camallanus worms. Get flubendazole, fenbendazole or levamisole hydrochloride. Please vacuum your substrate thoroughly when you do a water change to get rid of all the organic wastes that serve as home for the eggs and larva.

yup. its camallanus. if it looks like red threads, thats what it is.

apparently, levamisole is the only thing that works.

I have had it in the past and tried various dewormers (piperazine, disco-med etc) to no avail.

I was unable to kill the parasite in my affected fish and had to euthanize them to prevent spreading in my (then) multi tank fishroom.

when the worm is poking out, that is the female worm and that is when live larvae are being dispersed.

good luck.
