I went to the LFS yesterday and bless it, this little guy was in a tank with Oscar's and some other kind of cichlids and was getting the $#!× beat out of him. The tank label said "Oscar's (which were obvious)& blue acaras & flowerhorns. He was the only one that looked like a flowerhorn. I got him at the small oscar price and a discount because he was so beat up and lethargic...price $4.00.
I brought him home and luckily I had just...I mean JUST started a new plant tank (used only water from my big tank water change so it was already cycled)... put him in and he went straight down to the corner and did not move. This morning he is slow but moving around a bit. Maybe he will be ok, not so confident in my rescue ability. Can anyone give me an idea what he may be, I would be happy to know. Thanks & I love you guys

I can't really comment on ID esp. at that size but good on you for rescuing the poor little guy/gal. It's still stressed from recent experience plus moving into new home. So main goal now is to help it heal up by reducing stress: keeping water clean/parameters good, and maybe adding some a bit of salt to aid healing process. It might take a bit to settle in but it'll come around. Hopefully it'll start eating soon if not already, which would be a good sign.

You might consider to lower the lighting a bit at least for now, and would be nice if it had some cave or similar to hang out and feel safe (or could rearrange some of the plants in your tank to do same. Good luck and keep us updated how it goes.

Hey Guy! Thank you for the reply! You know, I have that tank layered with plants, he just landed in that corner and is staying there. Reckon the salt will hurt the plants? I have a couple of kinds of salt, wonder which would be best?
I saw flowerhorn pictures for the first time back in 2000 and fell in love with them but I could not afford to have one at the time, gosh they were so expensive but it didn't matter anyway because I'm in arkansas and nobody had any around here that i could find anyway. I wanted one so bad that I found a pic of a golden monkey and printed it, cut it out and laminated it then taped it to the back of my aquarium so I would have one ....every so often I would move it around to make it seem more real lmao.
This past summer my daughter who is grown now wanted a shrimp tank so one day we just hit the road ant went to several stores here in arkansas looking for pretty shrimp(also hard to find here) ...and behold I found a flowerhorn! She was in a 5 gal. tank and black as pitch, marked $75. She was in pitiful shape and didn't look like the ones I remembered from the pictures but I talked the pet store owner down to $45 and brought her home. I had no tank, no equipment, nothing but a big rubbermaid tub to put her in (better than where she was) so I ran to walmart and bought a big external filter and heater and set up my tub lol. I had finally...after 19 years got my first flowerhorn, pitiful & ugly as sin but she was mine. Now she is a big red ***** who refuses to lay an egg, eats like a horse and whoops on my little Male every time she can get to him! (yes I found another one a week later and drove 4 hours to get him).
Now, 20 years after I first saw a flowerhorn and wanted one soooo bad, I have been lucky enough to get 8 counting this little guy if he makes it. I have the 4 kamfas that I bought from ebay that are just amazing (to me anyway) 2 that you fellas here on MFK told me were red dragon and ZZ, another small red dragon and this little guy.
I'm cleaning out a spare room and going to move all my tanks there and have my own little flowerhorn world lol. I'm so glad I found you guys to share the hobby with, thank you all for being here to answer questions and talk to!

Honestly if ya got him in Sioux falls SD it might've been one of the flowerhorns I traded in. It definitely looks like the ones I've bred. I'll post a couple pics of the ones I've bred for ya to look at if ya want. If it's anything like mine tho it's probably part fader.
