I know that you if you want to mix purple and yellow tang you should do it at the same time. But when I started my reef tank little over a year ago now no one bothers to tell you all tang a territorial. So if you want tangs I'd recommend buying them last and all at the same time. My yellow and naso tang have cost me a few hundred dollars now. All new fish are chased for a few days stressing them out worse than they already are, needless to say they've killed more fish than they're worth. hope this helps.:nilly:

it only works with really large setups. talking 300 plus gallons. aside from the fact that tangs eat a lot of algae a day, your really running low on it after a week. this causes the tangs to fight for feeding ground.

Yeah, I didn't realize how aggressive tangs can be either.
We had a big yellow tang in our 75g reef tank. A few people falsely told us that tangs are ok with other tangs as long as they're not the same type.

Well we added a few clowns and a scopas. The yellow tang very aggressively attacked the scopas and chased the clowns until they just stayed in the top corner of the tank. We ended up having to move the yellow tang to an extra 90g tank we had.

I think it does have something to do with tank size though. Before we added the other fish the tang was fine with the 3 or 4 other small fish that were in there.

I really think that the agression has to do with the fish itself. I have had a Yellow Tang and a Sailfin Tang in a 125 g for about 2 years, I add a Blue Hippo Tang about 9 months ago with no aggression. About 3 months ago, I added a Purple Tang with no aggression, and a month ago I added a Vlamingi Tang with no aggression.
