Hey everyone, I recently got a 10 gallon aquarium, and I wanted to try my hand at my first real planted tank (with fertilizers and tons of plants, you know, the works), and I was thinking something like an Amazon biotope type thing.

I was just posting to see if anyone had any tips for the first-time planted keeper, or if you wanted to mention anything about my stocking layout.

For the fish, I was thinking just a smallish group of Glass Bloodfin Tetras (maybe 6 or 7), and then a Whiptail Catfish that I would be growing out to put into the 55 I have. I was also thinking that maybe a pair of Rams would look nice.

One thing that I am not sure about is what plants I should use. I know for certain that I will use Amazon Swordplant and Dwarf Swordplant, but apart from that, I'm not sure. Any ideas here?

Thanks for any input!

Yeah, that was the main thing that I was worrying about.

I have a 30 gallon and a 55 gallon that the Swords could get moved to if they get too big.

I just want some really nice looking background plant, that's naturally from the Amazon

One site I know of is plantgeeks.net they have quite a few profiles and you can even select them based on region. I'm trying to find the other site I found that was amazing but I'll get back to you with that one.

stay away from the whole echinodorus sp. (sword plants) unless it's a micro or dwarf variety. E. Amazonicus will get too big for a 55g even. Trust me, I have one in a 55 that sticks out the top. Valisneria is a good sp. seeing as it grows throughout the entire world. E. Rigidfolius will get a little too big for a 10g, but will fit in a 55. It will make a nice centerpiece for a 10g for quite a while too. Different cabomba sp. will work, as well the salvinia ferns. Both require med-high levels of light. (4-5 wpg in a 10g I would say).
