How big do the little turtles at the pet shops get, What would house them for life? Also what are some turtles that stay small, are there any? let me know, I would like to keep a turtle or two but have no large tank for them at the moment.
Depends on the turtle. Sliders can get to 12" while some maps don't get bigger than 6". Do you know what kind of turtle they are. Any turtle keep in the right conditions can live very long, I mean 30 - 100 years long.
they cannot sell red ears but they do sell yellowbelly sliders which are very similar. there are also a bunch of similar cooters and sliders that get quite large. If you want something small, I would say a mud or musk turtle if you can find them.
When referring to turtles, there are no breeds... only species. Turtles are not dogs. If you want something aquatic and small, go for musk turtles, they should fit into a thirty gallon. Most terrestrial tortoises get rather big.
Most shops sell red ear sliders, so if they only have one type this is usually it. Any pet shop selling baby turtles in the U.S. is already bending the rules to begin with (it is illegal to sell turtles under 4" as pets in the U.S.), so the legal side of things doesn't necessarily matter.
Always research. If you do not know enough about something to correct the guy at the pet shop you probably aren't ready for it yet. You should be able to identify any turtles you are thinking of buying regardless of pet shop labels.
I have 8 turtles in my tanks right now,3 Juvenile: map, slider, and snapping turtle in my 55 gal, and 5 babies in my 40 gal. The babies will all stay under 5 inches and they are western and southern painted turtles, 2 western and 2 southern, try to find males they are smaller... i also have a baby fla softshell in the tank but he will be moved to my pond in due time...good luck
