How many of you guys use live bait? I switch between artificial and live bait depending on what I am going for. When I do fish with live bait, I always use Red Worms. They are a smaller worm getting to about 4" max. But they are a very hardy and popular worm to use. They do not need to be stored in a refrigerator and could be raised in your home! I raise my worms in my basement in a rubbermaid tub! I feed them vegetable table scraps 2 times a week. You can also use their castings or poop for gardening fertilizer! I also feed my worms to my pet sunfish.
So who else uses live bait and what have you caught off it? I use them when I go panfishing and they work very well :D

i use it crawdads are my favorite for freshwater
the bass demolish them

I prefer artificial lures.. mostly because I make my own and have fun with the "do it yourself" :D

When I use live bait, it's usually when I catch my own fly fishing, netting, or trapping.

live, minnows all da way!

Minnows are okay but the thing I hate about them is they dont last long enough.

Its different everywhere you go, Here in michigan we use shiners for crappie fishing, down south you cant get shiners and use lures. For catfish I use live sunfish and bluegills. Smallies I use both live bait and lures. As for someone saying minnows dont last. Try fatheads ;). Rules for minnows go like this dont buy to many if you do keep a large air stone in the bucket at all times. During bucket water changes keep water consistant temperature. Keep minnows out of sunlight to avoid getting the water to warm. Fatheads are a hearty species and much easier to keep then shiners and other species.

When you fish in areas with a large amount of different species youll never know what u might catch, heres what ive caught when i use live bait, which is a good bit of the time.

Bluegills (1"-5") - Walleye, Yellow and White Perch, Smallmouth Bass, American Eel, Channel and Flathead Catfish, Rockfish, Redeye

Minnows - Crappie, Yellow Perch, Smallmouth, Flathead and Channel, Fallfish

Baby Shad - Rockfish and Channel Catfish

Alot of the times these same fish will hit on a piece of cut live bait too, so i always try to have a piece of it out too for that fish that looking for something smaller or smellier

I use both depending on what I'm fishing for. Nightcrawlers and redworms for bluegill and red ear, minnows for crappie, shiners on occasion for bass. Normally artificial for bass, trout, sauger and walleye.
