Since I've had my red oscar (roughly 3 1/2 - 4 months), I've been feeding it freeze dried food (mysis shrimp, bloodworms) and cichlid pellets. I was wondering if I could progress to feeding it comets. He's ~4 inches and has a decent sized mouth so I'm thinking it would be ok. And if I do, what would be the pros/cons of it?

No pro's and a whole lotta con's. Stick with what you are doing by giving it a varied diet. If you want to feed live use crickets or other insects. Do not use feeders. They carry diseases, parasites, and aren't very nutritious to begin with. If you really are set on using feeders then breed them yourself to insure they are healthy but I would suggest staying away from them.

yeah, there is no "progression" to what you mentioned at all. he will be much less healthy and very well could die. if you really want to see him eat another fish, you could risk it and give him a few rosy reds as a rare treat

I have a 9" & 3" O & I give them rosys every now & again. Yeah its not as healthy as the diet you have him on now but theres nothing wrong with it. They eat just about anything.. flakes, pellets, fish, worms, lettuce, even peas or other veggies. Some ppl might get upset I said that but oh well. Mine Os are perfectly healthy and happy. And Im sure leaves or berries and stuff get in the water in the wild and they eat it.

There is nothing wrong with your feeding at present, your opening up a whole load of problems if you switch to feeders. It's not broke so why try to fix it.

i agree... feeders are not worth the risk..... only feed feeders if you breed and raise them yourself... or your oscar could be doomed... so not worth the risk..and as already mentioned ... not much nutritional value.

I believe you should keep feeding what you are because it is more healthy for you oscar, but if you really want to feed your oscar live then i suggest feeding him quarintine feeders. But i truely would stick with the diet he has now.
