im wondering how advantages is it to have a good source of live food for cichlids. ive been reading about live brine shrimp, and this seems to be the easiest and safest live food. my LFS feeds all of its fish live brine shrimp. give me some insight and past experience with dealing with live brine shrimp. thanks

I don't like using brine shrimp due to their small size, but another option could also be earthworms that come from a good source

Brine shrimp are not very nutritous unless they are fresh hatched babies. They do ok as a source of roughage though.
so not worth the trouble. ok thanks

I don't feed any live fish and my cichlids all seem to be very healthy and grow at a pretty impressive rate.

Brine shrimp are GREAT for fry because they have lots of fat deposits. This is only if it's used within a few hours of them hatching.

But for older fish(not fry really) they probably won't do much since their just so small.

given the quallity of a lot of fish foods on the market i don't know if there really is much of an advantage for the fish. i personally do it for my enjoyment. i can watch my jag begrudinly eat a pellet, or act like a hungry puppy begging for a cricket. i have also been told that live food will help induce spawing in cichlids, but this is not something i have tried.
