dont know for sure, but i have heard that feeders arent too common there. i think that alot of people over there keep snakheads though. "Officer" i swear i wasnt trying to feed that catfish to the snakehead he was supposed to be a tankmate..

yes it's illegal, feeders are not just uncommon here, they don't exist.

In England when we need to buy feeder we just have to buy full priced fish. Like 3 to 4 dollars each for a goldfish or platy.

It sucks.

However, when I was a kid they WERE sold as feeders for cheap. Since then the laws have changed and you're not allowed to feed fish other live fish.

Although they sell river shrimp as food, live, they are both animals, it's hypocritical.

The whole thing pisses me off. Thousands of fish die a slow miserable death everyday for human consumption, on the way to a supermarket or fishmonger, yet you're not allowed to feed a live goldfish? :screwy:

So f##king hypocritical.

i never knew that...is it considered animal cruelty. what happens if you do feed live fish to your fish?

It is not illegal to live fish to fish
Enquiry:
Hi I am a member of a fish keeping forum. A question has arisen as to whether it is legal in the UK to feed live fish to other fish. I have searched all over for a definitive answer but can't find one. Do you know whether its legal or not, or the act that may deal with this.

Response:
Thank you for your enquiry. We are not aware of there being any legal constraints on feeding fish to other live fish or any animal. There is also no legislation that specifically allows the use of certain fish to feed certain other fish. However, there is clear evidence that fish are sentient, so such action could potentially be an offence under the Protection of Animals Act 1911 if a vet agreed that unnecessary suffering had been caused by such actions. The difficulty would therefore arise when trying to prove suffering had intentionally been caused. For example, piranhas (depending on the species) will scavenge fish scales off live fish, take dead or meat sinking through the water or if hungry enough could attack live fish. However, piranhas do not require the offering of live fish in captivity to trigger feeding, as feeding can also be triggered by dead meat/fish being dropped into their water tank. Another issue that could have an impact on the welfare of the piranha's and the fish being added for food, is the taking of fish from one water environment to then release straight into water of a different water environment. It is widely recognised that such practice can shock the fish and could even be fatal. I hope this information is helpful for you and thank you again for contacting us. So it seems that this mythical law about not using live vertibrates as food doesn't exist, but there is a law about causing unnecessary suffering to animals.
As in 99% of cases it's possible to feed dead meat to the fish, then feeding live meat can be deemed 'unnecessary'
It's an extremely grey area invoking ethics and philosophy as well as law.

beblondie, i would not take what the RSPCA says as gospel, they are just an animal rescue company, they don't make laws :)

they not make laws but they have to keep them in order
thanks you guys lots of help

I personally dont feed my fish any feeder fish not because of any cruelty issues but because i dont believe goldfish or even guppies are that good for my fish, i try to feed them a range of different things like crickets, bloodworm, mealworms, earthworms, superworms, mosquito larvae, oxheart, shrimp, tubifex and a good quality pellet or flake depending on the fish.

Truly some pathetic logic here, if you can't actually feed your fish other fish. Do they realize what fish food is made of? Fish meal, made from uhhh fish....Gotta love socialism, I love animals, but these friggin Animal activists have some incredibly skewed logic...
