It has been discussed many times that Tilapia fillet chunks make excellent feed for Gars. It has also been discussed as to how organ meat from fish contain far more nutrients then musscle meat from the same fish. With that said, would live Oreochromis niloticus (Nile Tilapia) make good feeders for Gars?

I am very near a spawn of these fish and am curious as to what the Gar experts think about them as feeders. They are astoundingly fast growers, unlike most other fish bred as feeder fish. One major concern is that the adult Niles have dorsal fins that are extremely hard, sharp and pointy like daggers and I am not sure if this would pose a threat to the Gars internals.

how big are the gars you are feeding the tilapia to? at the fry and small juvenile stage they should be just fine as food, but large tilapia will be too spiny, but likely before that is a problem they will outgrow the gape of the gars. tilapia have deep bodies, so once they are 3-4" they will be beyond the gape size of most captive gars (due to their body depth, and the width of the gars jaws).

feed them while they are small and you should be fine--

My three Florida Gars are all in the 1 foot range. My YOY LNG is over 20".

You can't believe the growth rate of the Nile Tilapia! I must be doing something wrong. I bought all four in January of this year as fry in the 1" - 2" range. They are now in the 11" - 14" range!
