The kind above water works best IME, with just the roots in the water, bamboo and pothos for example

what fish, is it going to be planted, what is your lighting and are you ok with plants in your filter (if a HOB)

Somewhere on this site is a thread called something to the effect of "live plants for filtration (why not more popular in the hobby???) An AWESOME thread, do a search and it should give you some good reading and great ideas for design and types of plants. Post pictures when you start experimenting ! - N
