looks like a Glass Anemone. clown fish don't actually use them. in my opinion and in what i've heard, they are pests... you can still keep them, i havent heard any downsides to them but they get overcrowded from over population, at least thats the trouble i had with them

Edit -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3NZXjxZaqo&feature=related

Also known as "Aiptasia". lot of Removal videos on youtube.
i used to have them too, and i got them the same way, from new live rock, i asked around some pet stores and found that they are pests and i bought some sort of powder or something (like in the video) to get rid of them

you should read more on them though, look them up and see if they fit the description and ask a specialist at a pet store. if you find a store that is for fish only it would be better, they would know more about what they are and stuff.

yea i did some more research after you mentioned glass anemone and the consensus seems to be that they arent harmful other than being a nuisance from over crowding rock, and an easy fix is peppermint shrimp.

it's Aiptasia and its a pest because it stings other corals,

oh ok, thx guys, i still need to wait a few more days before adding the first part of my clean up crew, but ill be getting some peppermint shrimp to hopefully take care of that

one out of every 10 or so peppermints eat them unless they are starved. there is an aptasia eating filefish that just demolishes them. he then picked on some of my zoanthids.....sigh so i relocated him to a friends tank. we trade him back and forth as needed. very hardy and really different for a first fish

exterminate asap, it becomes a plauge if left unchecked infact if its only on the one rock take that rock out and soke it in freash water for a few days (well a few days mite be overkill) to wipe them out, then put back in the tank so they wont spread (assuming they havent started already as their babies are teeny).

yea, it really does become a plague, i didnt know what they were at first either, by the time i found out my tank was infested, but at least i didnt have any other corals or anything in it at the time, my solution was the powder you buy from the store, mix it with a bit of water and feed it to them, it works =) but if you do want to save some money i guess soaking the rock in fresh water could work, but i think it would be harmfull to the live rock and it can kill off the critters that live in the rock.

That is true it would kill off anything in the live rock but if its only the one piece its ok as just rinse it good and throw it back in and it will become live agian and new critters will move in. Only problem is if there is anything big/dead on/in it as that would start a cycle which usually you want to avoid.
