Live Rock for marine tanks

I was wondering if I have a lot of live rock in my tank would a power filter be required? I want to try turning the filter into a refugium for pods. Thinking of moving the sponge into a veritcal position to separate the big part of the filter from the part with the motor.

I would say if you JUST had LR...you could just do h2o changes as your filtration.
