Is it possible to put live rock in a freshwater tank? This might come off as a silly question, but I really have no clue. Live rock when stacked upon each other have a very unique look, and they also promote algae growth very well, which is what I need.

Thanks,

Jason.

yeah you could do it but it wouldnt be live anymore (the organisms in it need a certian amount of salinity to survive) and it probably wouldnt support as much algae growth due to the lack of these organisms after placed in freshwater

the live rock would die, and it would also raise your PH level. There are better, cheaper ways to produce algae. are you trying to get the algae for a more natural appearance?

Yes and Tropheus like to graze on it. Not only would PH level rise there will also be ammonia spikes. I was wondering if there is a way to kill the live rock and also go past the stage of ammonia spike. Pretty much to simply put it, be able to use live rock safetly in my fresh water tank without hurting my stock.

I guess you could do a bleach dip or soak like you would a new plant. And then allow it to dry out and then pressure wash it real good, to remove most of the organisms.

But why not just use texas holey or slate?

Not a big fan of the way holy rock looks, and slate is not the way I want to go. I'm looking for more of a rounder shape of rocks, kind of like boulders?

If you have live rock... that is really "alive"...

It sells for around double what "base rock" (same rock as "live rock" just not "alive" yet/anymore)...

Why not sell it... take the money and buy base rock... and have double what you have now of the same thing...

But if you boil it... this will kill it... as well as remove the dead organisms from it... and make it suitable for aquarium use...

Thank you for all your help.

You could spread moss balls on other types of rock for the look... Right? Never actually tried to culture algae but the moss sure looks algae like.
