Ok so i went to the closest LFS (200 miles) and the guy has his LR selling for 8.99 / lb. Failed to ask him where he gets his from. Is this a rip-off?
Been itching to start on a marine FWLR tank but damn for that kind of money I'm looking at $200 in just live rock and sand to set up a 20 gallon properly with 1 lb / gallon (as far as i know thats right).

What gives guys do you have a better online source?

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately for you location and the small amount you "need" kinda works against you.
8.99 is kind of steep for standard Fiji. You'd be better off dropping that kind of cash online.

if you come to Houston lemme know and I can hook you up.

otherwise. . .your stuck getting it online.

Thanks for the input. What would be a good per pound price?

My little 20gallon FW to SW project has defiantly given me a better appreciation for those 300+ gallon reef display tanks you see. You never really realize the money that goes into one until you put pen to paper to make one of your own. But if i can get this thing to run and get my fish to live I'm pretty sure I'll be the only person in the Pecos and Brewster counties (two largest in texas) with a SW tank. :}

I purchased my all my LR from previous SW owners getting out of the hobby at $3/lb and covered in growth. I would say order online or find someone close to you getting out of the hobby and you can get a lot better prices on premium grade LR.

I payed 5.99lb at my lfs... that website seems like it has some nice rock... i understand what youre saying about the larger reef tanks, ive got a 10g reef tank and ive spent close to 1000 bones on it... easily.

Thanks for the site man I think I'm gonna just order online and use DHL shipping. There will be some die off but I'll let it cure for a month or so before I add anything to the tank.

Hoping to add a small goby and a pistol shrimp for sure. Maybe a cleaner shrimp and maybe a domino or a clown later.

Would the pistol and goby be good enough sand sifters or would i need to add something more for a 20 gallon? (has the footprint of your standard rectangular 10 gallon only twice as high)

And do you guys think 10 lbs of live sand would do the job to keep the shrimp and goby happy?

a place by me has kinda crappy (but good eventual growth) rock that's about 5.50.. that place also hase amazing rock for 10.99

another place has pretty good fully cured rock for 8.00

another still has the crapiest looking rock i've ever seen for 3.99

i would buy either alot of crappy rock or base rock and seed it with a few pound of the premo stuff...
