I've got a 75 gallon FW running, and in time I will be acclimating two Columbian Shark Catfish to brackish water. Is live sand a must? I really like the black Mexican beach pebbles...

Live sand isn't a must, nor will anything live in there survive at BW levels. You are better off with aragonite, to keep the pH steady, around 8. Nice-looking fish you have there. They do prefer traveling in schools though. A school of these fish are quite impressive but you're gonna need a HUGE tank!

Thanks for the knowledge, and thanks for the compliment! I've read that they do best in a school of three or more but, you're right, a gigantic tank would be crucial. Hopefully they'll do okay together in the 75 gallon. I won't be adding anymore fish, and I'm keeping their swimming space at a maximum. They LOVE the current produced by the power head. Thanks again!

From what I've gathered, they'll get to be anywhere from 12 to 14". I think the largest one thats been found in the wild was around 18"... Yeah, 24" would be WAY too big for this tank.

I'm not sure who told you about that "record", a place in inglewood has a large school of these at about 2 feet each.

I'm not sure about the anal fins indicating the gender of these fish... I've read that once they've reached adulthood, the female will have a little more girth. Thanks, though!
