I am posting here because I think there is a livebearing cold water fish that lives in CA. Does anyone know anything about this fish and if it can be traded in the fish hobby. I would guess there could be a problem if this fish was released in other lakes, but still, if I remember correctly, the fry of the larger species of this fish come out ready to reproduce themselves.

My intent is to find the ultimate fish for feeder purposes.

Hysterocarpus traskii is the scientific name. Nothing really out there that I can see on the internet. Any links will be appreciated.

That name belongs to the tule perch which is unique in that it spawns via internal fertilization and produces live young. However, the young aren't born sexually mature. They reach maturity in under a year depending on seasonal temps and availability of food.

Awesome find. I haven't heard that name in about 30 years. Check with NANFA (North American Native Fishes Association) to see what info they can provide. All I really remember is they're found in Putah Creek just east of Napa/Sonoma.

Great lead! I sent an email to the NANFA rep in CA. Hopefully he'll have some information to send back to me.

Thank you Guppy, this information rocks!
