Livebearers better than cons?

I've always bred convicts for a supplemental treat for my larger fish, but they are way too slow. I'm wondering if I should give livebearers a try? I'm thinking platys due to their smaller size. Any tips or tricks?

I've used Mollies with good results. The young are born bigger and grow quickly. I use one male to five females. One or two or three are always pregnant.
