Hey everyone... we have our 90 gallon tank underway....waiting on salinaty to get right. We are doing a reef tank, please help w/ suggestions on livestock. We know it will be a while, but we want to be informed. We want Clownfish, tangs, cleaners...and maybe an eel??? All suggestions welcome for coral friendly fish.

Eels tend not to be reef safe as they like to eat inverts. If you were really set on doing an eel I would suggest a snowflake but inverts will probably dissapear every now and then. Clowns are reef safe my personal favorites are black clowns, gold banded maroon clowns and skunk clown fish. Tangs work good depending on what you get I like sailfin tangs. You can also do blennies, gobies, basslets among other fish. Your best bet is to do some research, a lot of places that will sell them will tell you what is reefsafe and not. ones I like are liveaquaria.com and saltwaterfish.com not so much for buying fish but more just seeing what is out there and is a possibilty to get.

as long as coral-safe is all you're worried about and have epic filtration, eels are fine for reefs

lionfish
tobacco bass
frogfish
small snappers/grunts/bream

Its always tough having a lont to time to decide I know atleast it is for me because I alwasy change my mind about what fish to get

well the best information you can get is from us, however A good read for someone starting in the hobby with a reef tank livestock question is a few good book's I would suggest to you.

the first is a great book the third is a page of great book's that are all great read's for your livestock question's. Eel's are usually not great reef inhabitants in that they'll eat most sessile invertabrate's however with some reading you may find the right Eel for your desired setup in these book's

Yea... re-thinking the ell thing... good thing we have weeks to decide! :)

NO! Stick we an Eel... Snowflakes after they get comfortable become the most personallity fish in a tank plus they are just so awesome!

I've got a 100 gal running now with 1 clown, 1 blue hippo, and one firefish goby and all is well :). I would suggest if you want an eel, check for a small one at your lfs, mine has had one that is only like 5-6 inches max and very tiny around, proabably would be better to start with him small as he may develop into being used to the reef around him??? IDK, but could work...

Godd idea... thanks for the suggestion!!!! I hope to add sand this week, then rock, and maybe sometime in the distant future... an actual fish :)

I would be careful about adding rock after sand as it can cause the rocks to shift leading to cracks in the tank. I would lay down your rock work first then put the sand around it.
