Ive heard of them burying themselfs and eatin smaller fish do i have anything to worry about it doin that stuff in a tank or is it just something wild fish do will it be happy with the food he gets?
How big is your fish? All Malawi's will eat fry if they get the chance. The livingstoni will lie in ambush, but that I think is only in the lake. If you had a fully grown fish I do believe he could end up eating some 3-4 inch mbuna. That is their natural food in the lake. I have two, around 2-3 inches and growing. Swim together with the mbuna and eat whatever is put into the tank.
Great fish to keep.
If you can get one then I would say buy it. They are a nice fish to have with your other Malawi's. Lovely colouring pattern. Buy them small and you should not really experience any problems.
i would just like to add make sure u have plenty of room as they do tend to get rather large even in captivity i have seen them upwards of 8-10". my friend has one thats about 7 and still growing. they are a very cool fish i like them better as juveniles i like the coloring pattern.
I feel they are a nicer fish to keep than the venestus. Colouring is better. They grow quite fast compared to mbuna etc. Nice addittion to have in your tank.
The two I have have never looked like they would bury themselves and lie in ambush. Maybe it is something the true larger adulst do. I have had a mother caeruleus eat her young. The juvenile was of such a size its entire tail stuck out the mothers mouth. My son was distraught and wanted me to rescue the fish. Thought the mother was going to die. Left them and all was back to normal the next day. Any larger Malawi will eat fry.
