so, i came in from work and my bass was belly up. he was the first bass i ever caught on a fly rod and by far the most colorful largemouth i have ever seen. i had him a year and i loved that fish. so now, i have an empty 55 gallon tank in my apartment with a filter big enough to clean the water for a bass equavilent to a large oscar.... and i saw a tiger oscar at a store that was awesome.... so my biggest question is, how big does an oscar have to be to eat live food, and is my tank big enough for 2? how do you tell the difference between male and female?

I have a couple questions, first do yo know why the bass died. What type of filter is on this tank.
And what type of live food do you plan on feeding your oscar, almost all live food of any type is not a good staple food for oscars.

i assume the bass died of natural causes. all the test showed everything was good. i have an emperor filter and it works great with the bass. he was extremely messy. i fed the bass small bream, worms, and tons of shiners and goldfish from the bait store. i fed the shiners tropical fish flakes to strengthen them. as far as i have seen and read, goldfish are a good food for oscars so i assume they have a similar food requirement to bass, so shiners would be good for them. what should i feed? my wifes dad feeds his shiners and has for 6 years.

Sorry to hear about your LMB.Oscars are cool I had a pair of albinos for six years and they grew toa size where they could pull on my fingers. You need'nt feed them exclusively live foods even though someone else you know does it because they are omnivorous in the wild.Give them a varied diet of pellets, earthworms, small crawdads, feeders as treats and any friut or veggie matter you can get them to eat.Mine loved grean peas and diced carrots.

Well the filter is not bad when i had my 55 up and running I had 2 of those and a canister rated for 100 gallons but I tend to over due things.
About live food here is some info on that subject http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12521
But i can sum that up for you.... live fish is not good for oscars. in the wild oscars eat more insects that any thing.
I feed my oscars pellets, shrimp, vegies, and thats about it.
As for your tank you might be able to get away with one oscar with weekly water changes.

my three crawfish (native, saved from a boiling pot) are 4 to 5 inches longand they eat potatoes.... so when can i watch it destroy live food though? my bass was addictively fun to watch. ll he would eat was live food

Don't drain it and start over. I would just do a 50% water change. IMO i would change your water change routine to a little bit larger I do a bi-weekly 50% water change and that gives me a piece of mind that everything is ok.

i do weekly to bi-weekly 10-15 % water changes. would it be benificial to drain it and start over? start fresh or maybey a 75% since all thats there now is crawfish?
I would only do about 25% weekly or bi water changes with just the crawdads in there. When you do a complete drain and refill it destroys too much of the bacteria colony.

okay, well i just set up a 10 gallon because.... why not. i was going to but one or two of the smaller bream in there to give the bacteria food in the ten gallon. i think i am going to go with a betta and some cats for my girlfriend. i put some gravel out of the 55 into the 10 to get a start on bacteria. with the 55, i put the bass in it, then a week later finally got a good filter for it, then put rocks in it. i set it up totally backwards and wrong but the bass was in there for a year nontheless. how long do i need to let the 10 set or do i need to put bacteria in it?
