Hey everybody i was at a family restaurant and somehow we got into the topic of lobsters. My aunts fatherin law was telling me about how he has a lobster tank that i could have once i move. He said it holds 200 pounds of lobster but theres a litlle problem. I have no idea how many gallons or what the dimensions are so i was wondering if any of you knew how many gallons that would be? Alright. Now that i have rambled on about that heres my real question. When i find out the gallonage and dimensions and everything would i be able to keep a largemouth bass and a chain pickerel in the same tank? I really want either of the two and if that wont work out can you guys (and gals) tell me what other fish are compatible with picerel and or lbm. Thanks sooo much

Lobsters are stocked at 1 lb./gallon in display tanks, so it's probably a 200 gallon tank.

A chain pickerel can reach 30", so plan on 36" being the minimum width. Then figure at least twice that for the length. That's a bit cramped for a full-grown pickerel, but they are not very active fish.

Pickerel are not good for mixed-species tanks. They are stressed out by active fish, and don't compete well for food with aggressive feeders such as bass.

Bass are a little easier to mix. You'll need other big, tough, hardy fish. Bullheads, channel cats, or large suckers might work, as would large koi/carp.

Your lobster tank won't be big enough for a bass or a chain pickerel. It probably has a chiller. That opens up some other possibilities. How about trout?

thanks i actually was thinking about trout because it has a chiller. i only have one problem. i dont know where to get a trout or what kind would be good for that tank

What state do you live in? You might be able to get some fingerling trout from a hatchery. Brookies would probably stay small enough that you could keep several in the tank.

I live in Southern nj. Is there anyhing else that would be good with trout. I was thinking about starting another thread but im not sure. Thanks for the help by the way

No problem. I haven't kept trout so I can't tell you too much about tankmates, but I would guess that large minnows (river and creek chubs, fallfish, common and striped shiners, etc) would work well as tankmates. Medium-sized, cool-stream-loving centrarchids such as rock bass, Coosa bass, and longear and redbreast sunfish might also work.

Here's a private trout supplier in NJ: http://www.muskytrouthatchery.com/troutpricelist.htm

I was looking at musky trout hatchery. It seems like they have experience and are reliable. They also look like they have nice fish. I was actually lookin at brown trout, rainbows, golden trout, and tiger trout. I was wondering if you knew if they would be good in that size tank. I dont care if i would only be able to have one or just a species tank. Thanks for he help,

Rainbows, browns, and tigers get significantly bigger than brookies. I'm not sure which species their "golden" albinos are. I think you would be more likely to have these fish outgrow the tank. This is not a problem if you are willing to rehome or euthanize them.
